Hilltop Hideaway

In her renovation and redecoration of this spacious country house in Knowlton, Que., Romina was guided by the family’s desire for fresh, inviting spaces that encourage togetherness and pay homage to the picturesque landscape and views of Lac Brome, while also offering a peaceful retreat  from their busy life in the city. The new aesthetic marries the home’s traditional style — defined by a bold river rock fireplace, and original wood floors, doors and trim — with fresh hues, furniture arrangements built around favourite antiques, and thoroughly reimagined bathrooms and kitchen.

Practicality abounds in the mudroom, where panelled walls are painted sea green, slate flooring is easy-care, and ample storage makes room for loads of wet coats, muddy boots and tools.

Crisp, simple millwork gives the renovated bathrooms and kitchen transitional good looks that feel current, but are also at home with the house’s rugged and antique elements. The demure powder room is a nod to home’s colonial architecture. The breezy white kitchen is the perfect backdrop for everything from weekend brunches to bustling holiday dinner prep. Romina kept finishes pale and low-key, with the veined counters and pale brass hardware introducing a hint of glamour.

The serene bedrooms are soothing retreats layered with cheerful fabrics, playful accents, simple painted-wood furniture and local antique store finds. And in the spa-like principal bathroom, Romina set the stage with elegant stretches of marble tile, an airy glassed-in shower and a spacious vanity, then injected personality and depth with heirloom art and collectibles.
