Classic Clapboard

Refreshing a darling century home in Knowlton, Que., was a labour of love for Romina during the early part of the pandemic. Inspired by the Eastern Townships’ innate Town & Country elegance, the designer updated her bright, traditional spaces with cheerful preppy palettes, eye-catching fabrics and a treasure trove of beloved pieces. Storied heirloom furniture, wide-plank wood floors and buttoned-up Shaker millwork (all new) resonate with the area’s rich history, while unexpected hits like bold English textiles and playful local finds like old apple crates ensure that the rooms are warm and engaging. Here, gilt-framed oils (painted by her father, grandfather, and friends) and stately fauteuils clad in an ebullient green print happily share space with Canadiana pine, garden-style rattan seating and vintage finds like a hefty oak bench Romina’s father pulled from a condemned McGill University building shortly before its demo. This is a home that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
